Graduate employment - time to think

graduate employment

I often find that some graduates struggle with this nexus between campus and career. The sole purpose of this website is to help students and graduates to come to terms with their responsibility and thrive. If you have just completed studying at a prestigious university, then congratulations for getting through. But don’t expect doors at famous employers to automatically open for you just because of the brand on the top your degree. Global graduate employment trends indicate that graduate jobs are hard to find. You need to focus your efforts more on what you have that is unique in addition to the piece of paper in your hand.

Start the journey of self awareness. This will lead to a better ability to articulate your personal strengths, skills, personality traits and core values to employers. I suggest you work your way through the Successful Graduate course, starting here.

Recently I read in the newspaper that ‘more than half’ of students in Australia are chasing dying careers. 60% of Australian students are training for jobs that will not exist in the future or will be transformed by automation in the next ten years (study by the Foundation for Young Australians). This trend is similar in many countries around the world. Career pathways and study choices are the topics of other discussions that we will have. The point I want to make is simply that students and graduates must take responsibility for their own futures. Sure it can be hard as a school leaver to know what areas of further study to take. I know when I was 18 I had no idea what I wanted to do. But with the power of the internet at your fingertips you can do the research on graduate employment trends at any age. If there is a trend for less vocational design-based careers and you have a passion for construction, consider the increasing demand for engineering skills. You may not have the grades to qualify for engineering yet, so find out how you can complete pathway studies to reach your goal of a earning a university engineering degree.

And so here comes my earlier point once more. Don’t assume that once the degree is in your hand you will walk into a job. Your new journey of graduate employment has just begun. Now you have to work out how to land that graduate position. I hope this site helps you to do just that.
